What is an intuitive eating coach?

An intuitive eating coach is a health professional who helps clients develop a healthier relationship with food using an intuitive eating approach.

They use science and evidence-based nutrition information to help clients develop a better relationship with food and improve their health.

Intuitive eating is a self care framework for developing a healthy approach to food without any rules or restrictions. After years of dieting, it can be challenging to heal that relationship with food, exercise, and body image on your own.

And getting the help of an expert who has experience in the area can speed up learning intuitive eating.

You can expect an intuitive eating coach to help with goals like:

  • Understanding your hunger and fullness cues
  • Teaching the 10 principles of intuitive eating
  • Creating a better body image
  • Adding more movement and exercise with ease
  • Letting go of body shame and weight focus
  • Creating more ease and trust with food
  • Reducing overeating and emotional eating with kindness
  • Create better health without stress and restrictions

Clues an intuitive eating coaching is right for you

An intuitive eating coach may be right for you if:

  • You know you can’t do another diet, but have a hard time with the idea of so much freedom around food
  • Want support understanding your hunger fullness cues
  • Tried intuitive eating and felt like you couldn’t stop eating
  • Want to end emotional eating without feeling bad about being an emotional eater
  • Are ready to improve your body image
  • Want to be able to trust yourself around food

These are really just a few of the examples of reasons people have chosen to work with me as their intuitive eating and food freedom coach. It may or may not be the right choice for you.

And really any area you’re having difficulty with in creating an easier relationship with food, exercise, and your body an intuitive eating coach may be able to help.

What to look for in an intuitive eating coaching program

The most important part of finding an intuitive eating coach is finding someone you like. Because you’ll see the most progress if you join a program taught by someone you can trust. It’s vulnerable and not easy to talk about your relationship with food, exercise, and body image if you don’t feel comfortable with that person.

So find someone who you like, uses an intuitive eating approach, and doesn’t force their opinion on you.

Intuitive eating can look different for everyone and no one’s journey will look exactly the same.

So the last tip I’ll leave you with, if find a coach who promotes you being the authority over your own journey. That way you can customize your experience in the way that feels most aligned for you.

Yes, the intuitive eating coach may have a framework for you to follow (which can be very helpful), but ensure there’s room for you to choose what your intuition tells you is the right next step for you.

Because building self-trust is the most important part of intuitive eating (at least in my opinion).
